Wasabi and pickled ginger were again not the right flavor - the ginger was actually a little sweet - almost candied instead of pickled. The rice was again rather bland, but was put together well enable the nigiri to be eaten with either fingers or chopsticks. Perhaps because of this, there was no wasabi added to any of the nigiri. The same was true for the nigiri - nearly every piece of fish had nice flavor and felt clean and fresh. The salmon roll was also not well put together, but the salmon itself felt clean and fresh. The rolls were good portion size, but the quality of the spicy tuna was low - not much spice, too much breading and an erratic coating of rice on the outside of the roll. Unfortunately, the batter was again bland and too heavy with a very light dipping sauce. The tempura was delivered hot and fresh (always critical as for me tempura is like french fries and must be eaten hot). The salad had been premade and left in the refrigerator until needed the dressing had settled and water was pooling in the bottom of the bowl. The miso had little flavor but had a healthy portion. My expectations for the food were rising, and Katana did not disappoint.
KATANA SUSHI WINDOWS
Japanese-style screens cover the windows facing the parking lot, with modern furnishings and interesting color-changing LED lighting hanging in the entryway and over the sushi bar, highlighting the clean dining room. Once inside, I was surprised by the upscale atmosphere they'd created. Though I will say, ever since my car was towed from a nearly empty parking lot while I ate a quick brunch at Town & Gown Bistro during spring break (thanks a lot McDonald's), I am a man who appreciates ample parking, so Katana and I started off on the right foot. Located in a strip mall in the Pay Less parking lot on Sagamore Parkway and N Salisbury Street, Katana doesn't seem like much from the outside, nestled between a dry cleaner and a packaging store. While I wouldn't call my dinner at Katana Ramen and Sushi in West Lafayette life altering, it was unexpectedly very good and a place I'd definitely recommend.
